One of the rituals of summer camp back in the day was the snipe hunt. We were sent into the scary dark woods with nothing but a paper bag and a flash light, and instructed to hold the bag open while chirping “here, snipe” until one of the critters made its way into the bag.
Of course, there were – and are – no snipe. But Kris Kobach and Mike Pence are leading a pack of fools on an expedition of similar purpose at the behest of a narcissistic man-baby.
All hail the voter fraud commission – officially and ironically known as the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. Of its existence, the president of the League of Women Voters said: “There is no justification for this giant fishing expedition. The Commission itself is a distraction from the real issue of voter suppression, and that efforts to ‘investigate voter fraud’ threaten our most fundamental voting rights.” A lot of people agree. For a number of reasons.
First and foremost, the reason for creating the commission is the fevered delusion that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016 because several million people voted illegally. This alt-right legend is repeated here and there by various members of the commission, even though it has no basis in fact and has been thoroughly debunked.
Second, the vice-chair and several others on the commission all have strongly advocated for voter suppression laws, including restrictive voter ID laws. One commissioner even heads up a self-serving non-profit that has called for a national voter purge and published several “studies” claiming illegal voting by “aliens” – presumably meaning humans from other countries.
Third, any examination or critique of interference by the Russians in the 2016 election is purely incidental to the work of the commission, according to interviews with the Vice-Chair, who so far has done all the talking for all of the commissioners.
Finally, and possibly most foul, the commission is clearly partisan. Its chairman and vice-chairman are both Republican office-holders. It is being operated by the office of the Vice President. And although five of the commissioners appointed to date are Dems, not a single independent has been named – even though independents account for 60% of Millennial voters nationally and at least 25% of all voters in all cohorts.
Integrity? Not by a long shot. Fraud? You betcha.
